Did you know?

I had no idea you could become the President of the LDS church and not have served a mission.  How amazing is that?  Despite every previous president's admonition that all worthy must do so....

  2. I have read that President Monson did not serve a mission because of the world war when he was 19.

  3. The title of RM has absolutely no meaning to me. It does not give anyone any spiritual legs up on anyone else. Sure it may be a great thing to do, and one could really grow and mature while there, but I think there are many other ways to mature spiritually, and President Monson is sure to have done that.

  4. It does seem to lessen the impact of the "Lord commanding all young men to serve a mission" when the president of the church did not do so. While I think the military service is admirable many young men did so. In my opinion it does not make him any more stalwart then the next guy to serve his country. Be it as it may he was still eligible (so far as we know) to serve a mission upon his return but chose not to and was married instead to very immediately become a bishop. Very unusual by today's practice.
