"Do as I'm doing"... or else.

This is what happens if you don't do as you're told.

  1. Wow, that was actually painful to watch. I just felt a deep sadness.

Since people don't typically videotape talks in Sacrament meeting, I assume he had a plant in the audience, and that it was his intention all along to publicize this talk on the Internet.

As much as I empathize with Todd (and nobody is more opposed to Prop 8 than I am)... I actually found myself agreeing with the presider's decision to gently ask him to end his talk and step down. I honestly don't think Sacrament meeting is the place for grandstanding -- and that's what that was. It was disrespectful and destructive (burning bridges is destructive) and, well -- my impression -- an act of violence against the Spirit. Thus my sadness.

How we talk to one another -- and finding the appropriate context to talk -- is as important as, if not more important than, what we talk about. And this is a very important topic...! It deserves to be talked about appropriately...

But I also felt sad because Todd is obviously in some pain about this whole issue. I don't think he would have done what he did if he wasn't. So my sadness also came from feeling some heartbreak for him, and from my awareness of how painful the aftermath of such a talk would be for him and his family and everybody in that ward who cares about him...
